Also known as “Opuntia”, prickly pear cactus is a Florida native, and you can often find it growing wild in our coastal dunes. Coastal dunes are protected ecosystems though so harvesting from those areas is not advised. This plant has been a staple of indigenous cuisine in Florida and Central America for millennia. It is reported to have a myriad of health benefits relating to cholesterol and blood sugar regulation, and more. The pads can be a centerpiece of a meal, the flower is a great garnish, and the fruit is great by itself or for its juice. Make sure to remove the prickles before eating!
